On The Go and Overtime

What a long, long day.

I woke up to find it threatening rain outside so I quickened my morning plans and got to work on breakfast.  Because I scored more oat bran yesterday, I made protein packed breakfast cake this morning.  I chose chai protein powder and amped it up with some pumpkin.  The extra moisture called for another minute in the microwave but in the end I ended up with a sky high cake.

I threw it in tupperware to take with me but not before topping it with sunbutter and maple syrup.  I made it out the door just in time to walk a fourth of a block and hop into the campus shuttle that leaves from my apartment’s welcome center.  As we drove the city to get to the university I scarfed down my cake.  It tasted so good.  Could have been a little sweeter but that’s okay.  When we got to the stop and exited the van it wasn’t raining, thankfully, so I walked the three blocks to the student room.

I was the earliest I have ever been so I took the time to work on my case prep examination.  I got a few categories done and feel good about how it is coming out so far.  By 9am we first years headed over to class and we learned all about risk assessment today.  Calculations come easily most of the time but sometimes I forget the carrier 2/3rds rule.  I need to just commit it all to memory and practice, practice, practice.

After class we went back to the student room to pass the two hours before preclinic conference.  I decided to tackle my patient letter assignment due on Tuesday.  It came really easy to me to write it, so easy in fact that I’m nervous I forgot something or did something wrong.  However, because I’m done so early I’m going to let it sit and percolate in my mind for a few days and look it over on Sunday or Monday and make any changes before handing it in.

While I was working on the letter I munched on lunch.  I brought a piece of leftover lentil meatloaf and had a variety side of plantain crunchers, peanut butter filled pretzels, regular pretzels, animal crackers, and honey roasted peanuts.

I drew out the experience and didn’t end up eating all of the mix.  Preclinic conference was fine, though we didn’t get a schedule today so I didn’t have anything to write on to keep myself awake and focused.  I may or may not have started to nod off.  After Preclinic was Syndrome Review and we learned about Smith-Magenis syndrome as well as Fragile X syndrome.  Both were interesting presentations and took us right up until 3.  We didn’t have Dysmorphology until 4 so I used that time to read some articles and do some risk assessment optional homework.  I also snacked on some grapes and the leftover bits of my mix.

Class started at 4:15 due to technical difficulties.  We learned about taking dysmorphic histories and then we focused on the physical examination (particularly the skull).  A few of us All of us got called out for not reading the textbook prior to class so that is now on my list of things to do for next week (along with about 18 articles and other chapters…).  Unfortunately because class started late, we ended late too by 20 minutes.  At this point it was 5:30 and I was faced with walking home but thankfully Kayla offered to drive me home on her way to the gym.

I arrived back just before 6 o’clock and whipped up pizza dough to sit and rise while I was out at the fitness center.  Because I was really hungry I had a quick frozen banana bite with homemade cinnamon peanut butter to tide me over.  At the gym, I did the elliptical for 30 minutes.

I got sweaty and it felt good.  My right calf was really tight afterwards so I stretched it out before leaving.  When I returned home I chopped up some onions, garlic, green peppers, and mushrooms so sauté as well as soaked some sun-dried tomatoes.  When those were all finished I checked the dough.  It had not really risen as much as expanded and flattened out.

I pressed it into a circle, basted it with fat free ranch dressing and piled on the toppings I had cooked along with turkey pepperoni and pizza blend cheese.  I threw the pizza in the oven at 400F for 10 minutes.

Yum.  The crust was a bit too thin in the middle but the whole thing was delicious.  I ate it watching The Great Food Truck race I DVRed from Sunday (man I am behind).  I really love the food truck phenomenon.  I wish I had unlimited money to spend visiting all of them.  Wouldn’t that be awesome?

After a bit I started to hanker for dessert and made a s’more to start.

This one used regular milk chocolate not Mr. Goodbar so it was a bit more traditional.  It was also just as fantastic.  While you don’t get the roasted flavor by using the microwave you still get the melty factor which is totally worth it.  In addition to this portion, I heated up a dark chocolate chip cookie from the other night and topped it with a bit of Blue Bell Birthday Cake ice cream.

Great way to end the long, long, long day.  Now I am going to hit the sack.  I have a cancer counseling observation at 8am tomorrow and it is 13 miles away which means that, because of rush hour, I need to leave around 7:15 to make sure I get there in time.  After that I have a chiropractic appointment to see just how bad off my spine is because of my accident.  I have noticed my head seems pushed to the left so we’ll see what they have to say.  It is supposed to take something like 90 minutes because I’m new so I’m just preparing myself for the long haul.

With that my dears, I bid you good night and I will catch you all on the flip side of Friday!  Sleep well and I hope you end your week just as strong as you started it.

Question: Have you ever been to a chiropractor?
